From biomass to energy storage: LSIWC research presented at ISE 2026

Aleksandrs Volperts from the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC) participated in the 77th Annual Meeting of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE 2026), held from 6-11 September 2026 in Sydney, Australia.

The annual meeting is among the world's leading events in electrochemistry, bringing together researchers working on topics such as electrochemical interfaces, reaction mechanisms, biosensors, batteries, supercapacitors, and other advanced energy storage technologies. The conference featured fifteen parallel symposia covering a wide range of fundamental and applied research areas relevant to modern electrochemical systems.

At the conference, Dr. Volperts presented a poster entitled "Activated Biomass-Based Carbons for Electrochemical Applications", highlighting research carried out at LSIWC on the synthesis and characterization of biomass-derived activated carbon materials for electrochemical applications.

While the work reflects results from several research activities and projects conducted at the institute, the topic closely aligns with the objectives of the ARMS project, which explores advanced carbon-based materials for next-generation energy storage applications. As such, the conference provided an excellent opportunity to showcase expertise that supports and complements ongoing ARMS research.

The presentation attracted considerable interest from conference participants and sparked valuable discussions with researchers from around the world. Particularly encouraging was the interest expressed by an editor of the scientific journal ChemElectroChem regarding the potential publication of a research article on the presented topic.

Participation in major international conferences strengthens scientific networks, fosters new collaborations, and increases the visibility of research areas relevant to ARMS. Knowledge exchange and feedback from the international electrochemistry community will contribute to the continued development of innovative carbon materials for energy storage technologies.
